Seeking active joy. A beautiful friend sent me th Seeking active joy.

A beautiful friend sent me this message recently:

“There is a very famous philosopher called Spinoza who believed that the closest a human could get to perfection was cultivating active joy. Active joy is something we create, like building a house, rather than passive joy, like winning the lottery. I believe you cultivate active joy every day with your work, your business and all the things you actively create.”

It arrived at exactly the right time.

I’ve had a cold this past week and felt a little sore and sorry for myself. Reading those words reminded me that joy isn’t something that happens to us.

Joy is something we choose to create.

This week, my active joy has looked like:

• Walking by the water near my house.
• Treating myself to my current favourite iced coffee with cherry and vanilla syrup.
• Watching a beautiful black swan and her three cygnets gliding across the water.
• Finding time between two speaking gigs to get home and cuddle Finn on the couch.
• Baking a cake with Mat and Finn, then singing Happy Birthday to my great-aunt on her 96th birthday, even though we couldn’t be there in person.

None of these moments were extraordinary.

But together, they reminded me that joy is often found in the little things we intentionally make space for.

I’d love to know…

How are you cultivating active joy in your life?
If you’re looking for a speaker or emcee, I’d If you’re looking for a speaker or emcee, I’d love to chat.

Over the past week I’ve shared a little more about this part of my work, from hosting panels and conferences to wearing unicorn leggings and sequins on stage.

This reel brings it all together.

You’ll see me speaking, emceeing, facilitating conversations and doing what I love most, connecting with people.

Whether you’re planning a conference, awards night, panel discussion, leadership event or professional development day, I’d love to help create an experience your audience remembers.

Take a look, and if it feels like the right fit, my Speaker & Emcee Kit is linked below.

Does it actually matter what an MC wears? I’ve Does it actually matter what an MC wears?

I’ve been thinking about this after my last couple of posts.

My view is that it does.

Not because it’s about fashion.

Because it’s about presence.

When I walk on stage, I want people to feel my energy before I’ve even picked up the microphone. My outfit is part of that. It helps me feel confident, reflects my personality, and sets the tone for the event.

That doesn’t mean sequins are right for every occasion. I always dress for the audience, the event and the brief. But you’ll rarely find me in a neutral!

I’m curious…

Do you think what an MC or speaker wears makes a difference?

Or should the focus be entirely on what they have to say?
Bill Hunter is listening to his audiobook of A Lif Bill Hunter is listening to his audiobook of A Life of Magic today.

And being sassy as ever!

Jokes in the book. Jokes in real life.

Can you believe he is 103 years old?

This is my 1st cousin, twice removed. And I have written and published his life into a memoir & recorded it into an audiobook.

Here he is listening to his audiobook on Spotify, with is iPad. And FaceTiming me later to tell me about it. Remarkable is an under statement.

You too can listen to the book in this wonderful way. Narrated by actor Tyler Coppin in the voice of Bill, and by me the author, Emma Lovell.
